EU extends potassium hydrogen carbonate use
The European Commission has approved an extension of the EU approval for the fungicide, potassium hydrogen carbonate, to cover use as an insecticide. The change follows the completion of the peer review of the active ingredient by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA). Potassium hydrogen carbonate was granted EU approval in 2009, as part of a faster procedure that allowed low-risk ais to be authorised before the EFSA review was complete ( Agrow No 560, p 8). A further change to the approval conditions requires EU member states to impose appropriate risk mitigation measures to protect honeybees. The new conditions will apply from February 1st 2013.The ai holds national approvals in Belgium, France, Ireland and the UK.
