EU approval for new wood preservative
The European Commission has confirmed EU approval for a new wood preservative, N,N-didecyl-N,N-dimethylammonium carbonate (DDA carbonate). The application, from Swiss chemical company Lonza, was cleared by EU Ministers in May ( Agrow No 641, p 10). The active ingredient will be added to Annex I of the EU biocidal products Directive (98/8) on February 1st 2013. Products based on the ai cannot be used on wood that will be in contact with fresh water or used outside near water or continually exposed to the weather, unless data are submitted to demonstrate safe use. Conditions attached to the approval require the use of appropriate personal protective equipment. Industrial application and timber storage must utilise contained areas or impermeable hard standing to prevent direct losses to soil or water. Lonza sells the product as Carboquat in North America and Asia.
