US OKs Monsanto's third GM maize RIB

Monsanto has received US EPA approval for a “refuge-in-a-bag” (RIB) version of its genetically modified insect-resistant and glyphosate-tolerant Genuity VT Triple Pro (MON89034xMON88017) maize. Each bag of Genuity VT Triple Pro RIB Complete comprises 90% Bt maize and 10% non- Bt maize refuge seed. The maize produces the Bt Cry3Bb1 toxin for corn rootworm ( Diabrotica spp) control and the Cry1A.105 and Cry2Ab2 toxins for lepidopteran pest control. Monsanto expects to supply most of its Genuity VT Triple Pro maize hybrids as RIB versions for the 2013 growing season. The company introduced RIB versions of Genuity SmartStax and Genuity VT Double Pro maize this year following EPA approvals in 2011 ( Agrow No 629, p 25).
