Bayer/Mendel seek new herbicides
Bayer CropScience and US genomics company Mendel Biotechnology (Haywood, California) have begun a multi-year collaboration to jointly identify herbicides with novel modes of action. Increasing evidence of herbicide-resistant weeds, including those resistant to multiple herbicide classes, has spurred renewed interest in the discovery of new herbicides, the companies point out. Mendel’s knowledge of plant genetic regulatory networks and its suite of proprietary genetic tools and assays offer synergies with Bayer’s expertise in herbicide research and development, they add. The partners are also collaborating on the development of chemical products to regulate plant stress tolerance ( Agrow No 588, p 27).
