Portugal GM maize planting up 20%
Growers in Portugal planted 20% more genetically modified maize in 2011/12 than in the previous year, according to the Ministry of Agriculture. The area planted with Monsanto’s insect-resistant MON810 line reached some 9,278 ha. That followed a 60% rise in such plantings in the previous year ( Agrow No 626, p 11). MON810 is the only GM maize line approved for cultivation in the EU, and is used for the control of European corn borers ( Ostrinia nubilalis).
