Brazil call for tougher agchem use controls
A Brazilian agronomy professionals association has called for “effective health and agricultural protection” controls on the use of pesticides in the country. The Rio Grande do Sul state association, the Crea, has sent an open letter to the Ministry of Agriculture and other national and regional authorities calling for “rationalisation” of the use of pesticides. It notes that Brazilian growers used over 900,000 tonnes of pesticides last year. The Crea warns of an “urgent” need for “effective traceability” measures and to implement sanctions against those producing food with higher than permitted residue levels.
