Monsanto to fund corn rootworm research
Monsanto has pledged up to $3 million to support academic research on corn rootworms ( Diabrotica spp). It will provide awards of up to $250,000 per year for a maximum of three years to support research projects that address specific aspects of corn rootworm biology, genomics and management issues. The company cites USDA estimates of corn rootworms costing $800 million in annual yield losses and $200 million in treatment expenses. The programme will be guided by a ten-person advisory committee made up of representatives from academia, agricultural organisations and Monsanto.
