EFSA refutes Austrian GM rapeseed ban

Austria has supplied no new scientific evidence to support its request to prolong its ban on two genetically modified oilseed rape lines, says the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA). The country banned the import and use of Monsanto’s glyphosate tolerant GT73, which gained EU approval in 2005, and Bayer CropScience’s MS8 (male sterile), RF3 (fertility restoration) and MS8xRF3 (hybrid), which were approved in 2007. This is the second time that the EFSA has dismissed Austria’s ban on these GM crops under the safeguard clause of the EU GMO registration Directive (2001/18 – Agrow No 571, p 14).
