Brazil allows aerial neonicotinoid sprays

The Brazilian authorities have finally reversed July’s precautionary ban on the aerial application of products based on four neonicotinoid insecticides. The environmental agency, the Ibama, issued an order for a spray ban on products based on imidacloprid, thiamethoxam, clothianidin and fipronil due to concerns over their effect on bees ( Agrow No 645, p 16). The Ministry of Agriculture, along with the Ibama, is to regulate aerial applications, permitting their conditional use on soybeans and sugar cane, and unconditional on rice and wheat, until June 30th 2013 as exceptional use authorisations.
