UK launches organic food testing consultation
The UK Department for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) has launched a consultation on the testing of organic food and feed for substances such as pesticides that are not allowed in organic production. The Department says that EU Regulations 834/2007 and 889/2008 on organic production and labelling of organic products provide a framework for the testing of organic products but contain little detail on the procedure that should be followed. The DEFRA has produced some draft guidance notes for UK organic crop control bodies and operators on the procedures that should be followed. The aim is to have a consistent approach to be adopted across the UK. The consultation ends on December 21st.
