Brazil police seize illegal agchems
Brazilian police seized 13 tonnes of contraband pesticides in the first nine months of 2012, newswire Agrolink reports. Joint federal and state police operations also made 110 arrests of those suspected of smuggling, environmental and tax evasion crimes. The Rio Grande do Sul state Operation Salamanca, which was launched earlier this year by the environmental agency, the Ibama ( Agrow No 637, p 16), has resulted in one fine of R$4.5 million (US$2.2 million at the current rate) of a farm owner in the state. A Ministry of Defence campaign, Operation Agata, included almost 20,000 public officials of various bodies and seized some 500 litres of illegal products, Agrolink reports. Other state operations also included military police. A neighbourhood watch campaign has so far received 17,000 calls. Stronger campaigns led to a 70% rise in seizures of illegal products last year ( Agrow No 635, p 14).
