EU Ombudsman welcomes bee/insecticide review
The European Ombudsman, P Nikiforos Diamandouros, is satisfied that the European Commission is taking sufficient measures to review the possible links between neonicotinoid insecticides and increased bee mortality in the EU. He opened an investigation in March in response to a complaint from the Austrian Ombudsman that the Commission was failing to take account of new scientific evidence of a link ( Agrow No 638, p 13). In April, the Commission asked the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) to carry out an in-depth review of the effects of the insecticides, thiamethoxam, clothianidin, imidacloprid, acetamiprid and thiacloprid on bee survival and behaviour. It is due to be completed in December ( Agrow No 642, p 10).
