Brazil court suspends Monsanto royalties

A Brazilian court has ordered Monsanto to suspend its charging of royalties for use of its genetically modified glyphosate-tolerant Roundup Ready soybeans and insect-resistant Bollgard I cotton. The Mato Grosso State Justice Tribunal granted an injunction to farmer groups, including the state farmers’ union, the Famato, which had claimed that the Monsanto patents expired in September 2010. The injunction “immediately suspends the charging of any royalty fees and/or compensation for the technology”, the Famato says.
