Monsanto halts Brazil RR soy royalties

Monsanto has suspended the charging of royalty fees for use of its genetically modified glyphosate-tolerant Roundup Ready soybeans in Brazil. It follows a court injunction earlier this month calling for suspension due to patent expiry ( Agrow No 650, p 3). Claimants in the case, including state farmers’ union the Famato, say that the ruling has national jurisdiction. Monsanto denies this. “The injunction of the Matto Grosso Tribunal [TJ-MT] applies only to the state [of Matto Grosso],” it insists. “Monsanto has voluntarily suspended the charging of royalties for use of the first-generation Roundup Ready soybeans in the whole country.”
