Argentine wheat area to fall by 20%

The planting of wheat in Argentina will have fallen by 20% this season compared with 2011/12 to 3.7 million ha, according to the early or “provisional” estimates from the Ministry of Agriculture. The maize area is also anticipated to be down but to have barely dipped from 5 million ha. The Ministry’s statistics office, the SIIA, has yet to issue early estimates for the country’s major crop, soybeans, the area for which dipped by 1.2% to some 18.7 million ha in 2011/12 ( Agrow No 630, p 18).
