Canada allows continued MCPB use
The Canadian Pest Management Regulatory Agency (PMRA) is to allow the continued use of the phenoxy herbicide, MCPB, following a review of risks to human health and the environment. The PMRA found that dietary risks were not of concern and that occupational risks could be mitigated by revised labelling directions. They include a restricted entry interval (REI) of 12 hours for most crops and a nine-day REI for maize scouting. The PMRA also requires buffer zones of 1-175 m to protect aquatic and terrestrial habitats from spray drift. MCPB is used on a range of crops and is among the scarce post-emergence herbicides for use on peas, the PMRA notes. It is also one of a few herbicides that can be applied at a late stage to maize.
