GM crop trial moratorium looms over India

An Indian expert committee appointed by the Supreme Court has recommended a moratorium on field trials of genetically modified crops. The Technical Experts Committee (TEC) has called for a ten-year ban on field trials on GM food crops, while trials on other GM crops and herbicide-tolerant crops are to be suspended pending the meeting of certain conditions. The Court appointed the TEC in May, directing it to submit a report on various aspects of field trials within the country ( Agrow No 640, p 20).
