Brazilian agchem imports jump 28% in 2011
Agrochemical product imports into Brazil shot up by over a quarter (+27.7%) to $1,958.8 million in 2011 compared with the previous year, according to estimates from the fine chemicals companies’ association, the Abifina. Imports had more than doubled from 2007, and more than tripled from 2006, when Brazil imported just $568.5 million of pesticides. The association also records a rise in exports of pesticides in 2011. They were up by 11.4% to $471.7 million. The negative balance of trade widened by a third to $1,487.1 million. The Ministry of Development and Foreign Trade released figures last year showing a 14% rise in imports of formulated products and active ingredients for the first ten months to over $2,500 million ( Agrow No 629, p 18). That included some $1,700 million of formulated products.
