MEPs support EFSA's independence
The European Parliament has accepted measures undertaken by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) to ensure its independence from industry. It voted in October to clear the Authority’s 2010 accounts, as recommended by its budgetary control committee ( Agrow No 650, p 9). Earlier this year, Parliament postponed its “discharge” of the accounts due to concerns over independence and costs. A prolonged delay could have disrupted the EFSA’s ability to operate.
