Brazil bans aldicarb
Brazil banned the sale, production and all uses of the insecticide/nematicide, aldicarb, last month. The national health surveillance agency, the Anvisa, notes that aldicarb is widely used in the nationally infamous “chumbinho” - a crop insecticide illegally but commonly used as a rodenticide in the country. “The motive for the ban is the high incidence of poisonings to humans and animals from that use,” the Anvisa explains. Aldicarb is responsible for 60% of the 8,000 annual cases of poisonings from chumbinho, the agency adds. The Anvisa cancelled its toxicology evaluation in June.
