Indian govt defends GM crop trials

The Indian government has defended field trials on genetically modified crops, saying that any move to stop them would be a blow to Indian science and would put the country back 20 years in scientific research compared with other growing major economies such as China and Brazil. The government’s Attorney General raised objections in the Supreme Court to a report by a Court-appointed Technical Experts Committee (TEC), which recommended a moratorium on field trials on GM crops last month ( Agrow No 651, p 16). The central government and the industry were asked for their responses by the Court.
