EFSA mulls requirements for next-generation GMOs

The increasing complexity of the new generation of genetically modified crops will result in further revisions of the evaluation guidelines produced by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA). Rather than the traditional method of comparing the GM line with its conventional counterpart, a comprehensive assessment of the novel product’s characteristics will be needed, says Harry Kuiper, formerly of Wageningen University in the Netherlands. He was speaking at a conference this month to mark the first ten years of the Authority.
