New EU commissioner supported by MEPs
The European Parliament has voted in favour of Maltese candidate Tonio Borg becoming the new EU Commissioner for the Health and Consumers portfolio, which includes the regulation of pesticides and genetically modified crops. Mr Borg was nominated after the resignation of previous Commissioner John Dalli ( Agrow No 651, p 7). Mr Dalli’s departure left certain issues, particularly on GM crops, in limbo. However, at a three-hour grilling by MEPs earlier in November, Mr Borg gave few indications of his policy approach in this area.
