USDA panel divided on GMO co-existence

A USDA advisory committee has called for the evaluation of data to determine the extent that farmers growing crops for identity preserved (IP) markets have suffered economic losses from the impacts of genetically modified crops. After a year-long investigation, the Advisory Committee on Biotechnology and 21st Century Agriculture (AC21) could not agree about the extent to which a problem exists and whether there are enough data to warrant a compensation mechanism to address it. The Committee members acknowledged that unintended GM material was found in commercial products but differed in their assessment of its significance.
