Indian panel recommends endosulfan phase-out

A joint expert committee appointed by the Indian Supreme Court has recommended continuance of the manufacture and use of the insecticide/acaricide, endosulfan, for two years to exhaust the available stocks of the raw material, national media report. In its report, the committee cited information from the Ministry of Agriculture that if no further import of raw material were allowed, the existed stocks should be depleted within a period of two years after its manufacture. The Court imposed a ban on the production and sales of endosulfan last year ( Agrow No 616, p 23) and tasked the committee with examining the matter of disposal of stocks.
