EU to study biotech patent laws
The European Commission is to set up an expert group to examine the development and implications of patent law in biotechnology. The group will also help the Commission in its obligation to provide annual reports on the implementation and impact of the EU biotechnology patents Directive (98/44). The Commission was criticised by the European Parliament earlier this year for the fact that no report has been published since 2005 ( Agrow No 640, p 8). The decision to set up the expert panel reflects the complex nature of biotechnology, particularly in relation to patent law, it notes.
