EU approval for phosphane
Formal EU approval has been granted to a new post-harvest insecticide treatment, phosphane, from German company S&A (Service und Anwendungstechnik). The company applied for use as a fumigant on coffee beans, cacao beans, fatty seeds, dried fruits and stored cereals ( Agrow No 651, p 8). The EU approval conditions stipulate that applications must be by professional users only. When granting national product approvals, member states must ensure the protection of operators, workers and bystanders. Risk mitigation measures suggested include: permanent monitoring of the phosphane concentration by automatic devices; the use of personal protection equipment; and setting up an area around the treated premises to deny access to bystanders. Phosphane will be added to the annex of approved ais in the EU agrochemical registration Regulation (1107/2009) on April 1st 2013.
