Dutch call for action on neonicotinoids

The Netherlands has called on the European Commission to take EU-level action where high risks have been identified for honey bees from the use of three neonicotinoid insecticides. The call came at the EU Agriculture Ministers meeting in January and followed a report from the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) on clothianidin, imidacloprid and thiamethoxam ( Agrow No 656, p 6). The European Commission is gathering comments from the two approval holders, Bayer CropScience and Syngenta, and from member-state representatives in the EU Standing Committee on the Food Chain and Animal Health, prior to deciding on any measures to take.
