Monsanto to test MON88701 cotton in Australia

Monsanto has applied to the Australian Office of the Gene Technology Regulator (OGTR) to conduct field trials of its genetically modified dicamba- and glufosinate-tolerant MON88701 cotton. The company plans to test the cotton in combination with its commercially approved glyphosate-tolerant Roundup Ready Flex (MON88913) and insect-resistant Bollgard II (MON15985) and the unregistered insect-resistant COT102 cotton, which produces the Bt Vip3A toxin. Monsanto aims to carry out the tests between October 2013 and October 2019 on up to ten sites of no more than 10 ha per site for the first two years and up to 20 sites of a maximum of 30 ha per site for the following four years. The OGTR expects to issue a risk assessment and risk management plan in late April.
