Ecuador President eyes U-turn on GM crops

Ecuador President Rafael Correa is performing a U-turn on his previous antagonism towards genetically modified crops, press agency, AFP, reports. His re-election campaign includes a call to legalise the technology, which his government impeded with the declaration in 2008 of Ecuador as “GM crop free”, AFP reports. In September, the President reportedly said that GM crops “could quadruple national crop production and deliver the most depressed agriculture sectors out of misery”, while his previous legal moves had been an “error” after being influenced by “childish environmentalists”.
