EU to maintain GMO stance in US talks
The EU’s regulations on genetically modified organisms will not be part of the forthcoming free-trade talks with the US, stresses European Commission president José Manuel Barroso. Negotiations are to start on a transatlantic trade and investment partnership that will cover a wide range of sectors. Mr Barroso’s comments indicate that the talks may not resolve the long-running dispute over GMOs. The US has been sharply critical of the EU’s slow approval process and the resultant blocks on US exports of GM crops and food.
