EU to reduce REACH costs for SMEs
The European Commission is to propose reduced registration fees for small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) submitting substances under the EU Registration, Evaluation and Authorisation of Chemicals (REACH) Regulation. The move follows a Commission review of the first five years of implementing the Regulation, in which it acknowledges the cost burden on smaller companies. REACH covers a wide range of chemicals, including agrochemical intermediates and co-formulants. From the start, industry had expressed concern over costs and deadlines ( Agrow No 619, p 9). More recently, some national regulators have also asked for changes in view of the current economic climate ( Agrow No 631, p 9).
