French fungicide expenditure up 24% in 2012
Fungicide expenditure on cereals went up by 23.8% to €78 ($106)/ha, last year, an increase of €15 ($20) over 2011, reports French newswire Agrisalon.com, citing a study by the French Arvalis plant institute. Expenditure was down 6% in 2011 ( Agrow No 631, p 10). The year 2012 was marked by severe disease pressure on winter barley, with yield losses reaching 16 quintals (1.6 tonnes)/ha compared with around 7 quintals/ha in the previous two years. While admitting the impossibility of predicting the expenditure level for 2013, Arvalis places the benchmark at €80 ($109)/ha to tackle disease pressure leading to a yield loss of about 20 quintals/ha. It recommends diversifying the modes of action of fungicides and not using the same active ingredient twice in a season.
