Agbiotech committee formed in Pakistan
A biotechnology committee has been formed by industry association CropLife Pakistan to promote the benefits and responsible use of plant biotechnology in Pakistan. Comprising Bayer CropScience, DuPont Pioneer, Monsanto and Syngenta as initial members, it will engage with the country’s biotechnology regulatory agencies for implementation of the Biosafety Guidelines and Rules 2005 so that science-based and transparent regulatory processes are introduced in Pakistan. The committee will identify biotechnology regulatory needs of the country and engage with the government to ensure that these become part of the regulatory framework. It will also create awareness and enhance acceptance of biotechnology by closely working with regulators, scientists, farmers, media, industry, academics and civil society. Pakistan approved the commercial cultivation of genetically modified insect-resistant Bt cotton towards the end of 2009 ( Agrow No 582, p 24).
