USDA OKs two biocontrol releases

The USDA’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) proposes to issue permits for the release of two biological control agents for the control of plant pests. It intends to allow the release of the parasitoid wasp, Aphelinus glycinis, to reduce the severity of damage caused by soybean aphids ( Aphis glycinis) on soybeans, and the predatory beetle, Scymnus coniferarum, to control hemlock woolly adelgids ( Adelges tsugae) on hemlock trees. The APHIS has conducted environmental assessments on the proposed releases and issued findings of no significant impacts.
