EU agrees revision of GMO application rules
EU member states have agreed a revision of the data requirements for approvals of genetically modified food and feed. Among the proposed changes is a requirement for all applications to have feeding trials on rodents lasting for a minimum of 90 days. Currently, 90-day trials are conducted on a case-by-case basis, although they are commonly used for GMO applications. The European Commission’s proposed revision was voted through by the EU Standing Committee on the Food Chain and Animal Health in February and requires confirmation by the Commission before coming into force.
