New Zealand reports fumigant emissions
All but two of 26 establishments in New Zealand reporting use of the fumigant, methyl bromide, in 2011 met annual average concentration limits around the sites. Air monitoring requirements were put in place in 2011 for sites using more than 500 kg of methyl bromide each year. Six of the 26 reporting sites used less than 500 kg of the fumigant, but reported monitoring on a voluntary basis, the Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) notes. One site reported concentrations six times above the annual limit and has since installed recapture equipment. The other site over the limit no longer carries out fumigation, the EPA reports.
