Monsanto's GM canola gains ground in Australia

Monsanto’s genetically modified glyphosate-tolerant canola accounted for 11% of the 1.5 million ha of canola harvested in Australia in 2012, according to the company. Roundup Ready canola harvests have more than doubled in just three years, it adds. Monsanto expects to see further expansion this year as China is reopening its market to Australian canola after resolving import restrictions over the disease, blackleg ( Leptosphaeria maculans). “China, along with other major markets in Asia, accepts GM canola, so Roundup Ready canola growers stand to benefit from regaining access to this important market,” says Monsanto Australia managing director Daniel Kruithoff.
