EFSA notes data gaps for DuPont's 98140 maize
The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) says it is unable to complete its assessment of DuPont seed subsidiary DuPont Pioneer’s genetically modified herbicide-tolerant Optimum GAT (98140) maize line because of insufficient data in the application. The maize is tolerant to glyphosate and acetolactate synthase (ALS)-inhibiting herbicides. Pioneer applied for EU approval for import and use in food and feed in 2008. However, commercialisation was subsequently delayed in other countries after concerns over yields and a legal dispute in the US, which ruled that Optimum GAT maize and soybean lines infringed Monsanto’s Roundy Ready technology ( Agrow No 646, p 2). The two companies settled their litigation and entered into licensing deals this month ( Agrow No 661, p 2).
