No progress on EU GM crop approvals

Fewer genetically modified crop lines were authorised in the EU in 2012 compared with previous years, and there has been no improvement in the time it takes to approve a product, says the European biotechnology industry association, EuropaBio. In its latest update on the status of EU GMO registrations, the association notes that it still takes an average of 45 months to grant approval for import and food and feed uses. It takes longer to move stacked products through the system, because the EU does not start the evaluation until the individual trait assessments have been completed, it adds.
