Brazil issues corn earworm control guides

The Brazilian Ministry of Agriculture has issued rules governing measures to be adopted for the control, prevention and eradication of corn earworms ( Helicoverpa armigera) following the declaration of a plant health emergency. One or more of eight guidelines may be used to control the pest, including use of: biological controls; baits and traps; the mass release of biological control agents; the adoption of emergency IPM; and leaving land fallow for a determined period between harvests. The emergency situation was called at the start of April, and several insecticides have since been approved for use on cotton to control the pest, including DuPont’s chlorantraniliprole (trade-marked as Rynaxypyr) and indoxacarb, and BASF’s chlorfenapyr, as well as imports of emamectin benzoate from countries that have authorised its application on cotton and soybeans ( Agrow No 662, p 22).
