Argentina to approve GM cane within months
Argentina is expected to approve a herbicide-tolerant sugar cane variety in the coming months, newswire SciDev reports. It claims that the product is from a field trails station in Tucuman, and that Minister of Agriculture Lorenzo Basso is to aid the cane bioethanol sector with $100 million of government funds. Argentina presented an updated regulatory framework earlier this year intended to speed up the approval process for GM crops ( Agrow No 661, p 21). Argentina has approved 28 GM crops for commercial use since 1996, of which 11 were authorised in the past two years ( Agrow passim).
