US Supreme Court rules for Monsanto in seed saving case

The US Supreme Court has ruled in favour of Monsanto in a case over patent infringement from the cultivation of genetically modified glyphosate-tolerant soybeans. The Court heard arguments in February and appeared to have sided with Monsanto in the case brought by Indiana farmer Vernon Bowman ( Agrow No 659, p 17). On May 13th, the judges unanimously upheld an appeals court ruling in favour of Monsanto that “patent exhaustion” did not apply to the farmer’s second-crop plantings.
