NZ eradicates aquatic weed on South Island
The New Zealand Ministry for Primary Industries has declared that the aquatic weed, hornwort ( Ceratophyllum demersum), has been eradicated from the South Island. The weed was found in Timaru Centennial Park Lake in 2006 and treated with the aquatic herbicide, endothal, in 2008. It has not reappeared. Hornwort is classified as an unwanted organism under the 1993 Biosecurity Act and is banned from sale, propagation and distribution. It is widely established on the North Island.
