EU agchem industry issues water protection guides
Two best management practice guides on reducing water pollution by agrochemicals have been issued by an industry partnership including the European Crop Protection Industry (ECPA). One covers measures to protect water from spray drift, while the other deals with run-off and erosion. The guides have been developed by the ECPA, national crop protection industry associations and a broad group of international partners. They form the latest phase of the TOPPS (Train the Operators to Prevent Pollution from Point Sources) project, which was initiated in the EU in 2005 to focus on mitigating agrochemical contamination from point sources, such as when cleaning sprayers or as a result of spills ( Agrow No 559, p 8). Since 2011, the focus has switched to diffuse pollution sources, which are primarily run-off and drift. The latest phase is called TOPPS Prowadis (Protecting Water from Diffuse Sources). The new guides are available on the ECPA’s website at: http://www.ecpa.eu/dashboard/section/environmental-protection.
