US OKs streptomycin for citrus canker
The US EPA has established temporary tolerances for the use of the antibiotic, streptomycin, on grapefruit for the control of citrus canker (Xanthomonas citri). The tolerances are associated with an emergency exemption request from the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services (FDACS). The FDACS sought the exemption to allow usage on 54,000 acres (21,853 ha). Citrus canker was once limited to localised areas in Florida but it has become widespread after recent severe hurricane seasons, the FDACS points out. The tolerances apply until December 31st 2015.
