Spain founds public/private plant health body
The Spanish national plant health committee was formed this month, involving government and private sectors seeking solutions to current concerns in plant health. The committee involves the Ministries of Health and Agriculture, the “primary product” sector such as farmer and co-operative groups, the Spanish fruit and horticultural exporters and producers' association, the Fepex, and pesticide product associations. Its remit covers: the use and marketing of pesticides, including advice on their sustainable use and the formation of a national action plan; eradication of pests; and changes in EU legislation on plant health issues. The constitution is part of the reorganisation process of consultative bodies initiated last year by the Ministry of Agriculture (Agrow No 644, p 10). “National phytosanitary measures, including speedy and complete access to pesticide products has become a determinant for the sector’s competitive viability in an international market,” the Fepex comments.
