United Kingdom: Group comments on EU pesticides legislation implementation
In response to the U.K. Department of Environment, Food and Rural Affairs' consultation on the implementation of EU pesticides legislation, the British Crop Production Council says it is completely opposed to a set pesticide reduction target. "The method, timing and frequency of application are the key determinants of risk, rather than the amounts of product or active ingredients used," the council says. In addition, the council is against prohibiting pesticides in public and conservation areas as minimizing pesticide use is far more cost-effective than developing alternative control methods. The council also recommends increased research and development, advanced training for applicators and addressing the lack of quality crop protection specialists.
