Brazil CTNBio seeks more Herculex Xtra maize data
Dow AgroSciences/DuPont Pioneer’s genetically modified insect-resistant and herbicide-tolerant Herculex Xtra (DAS59122xTC1507) maize was withdrawn from this month’s meeting of the Brazilian biosafety commission, the CTNBio, after three commission members requested further data. Another six commercial applications for GM crops, including three from Dow, and one each from Syngenta, DuPont Pioneer and the Brazilian enterprise, Solazyme Brasil, were withdrawn from the meeting’s agenda, while a Bayer CropScience GM soybean line, code-named F72, remained under analysis. The CTNBio did approve the post-commercial monitoring plan for Bayer’s glufosinate-tolerant LibertyLink cotton. The product was approved for sale and cultivation four years ago (Agrow No 538, p 23). Applicants have been allowed to submit their own plans for approval since 2011 (Agrow No 620, p 17). It was the only application among 20 to gain approval, with others being withdrawn from the commission’s May meeting agenda.
