German environment agency advises parents to seek products without phthalates

German federal environment agency Umwelt Bundes Amt (UBA) is advising parents and day care centers to purchase products that do not contain "worrisome plasticizers (phthalates)." REACH requires companies to provide information within 45 days about any Substances of Very High Concern; "parents and day care centers should make use of this right," says UBA President Jochem Flasbarth in a March 24 news release. The advice comes in the wake of a Friends of the Earth Germany report on high levels of phthalates in day care centers.
